The Stories Our Bodies Tell

So often we don’t even see that the story of our lives is written in our bodies.

Our bodies are a powerful physical representation of how we feel on the inside. A forward head tells the story of a life spent on an iPhone. A humped back and poor posture can tell the story of poor self-esteem. Asymmetry, pain, a pooch, a flat bottom: these attributes are not as often a result of the story written in our gene pools. No, these are symptoms, direct excerpts from the story written by the way we’ve spent our time. How we have taken care of ourselves (or not). How we feel on the inside.

Fitness and wellness are not exclusively journeys spent on the outside. Very often, giving ourselves what we need can kickstart a powerful journey on the inside.

Exploring correct posture and alignment is more often than not a deep journey of self-exploration for my clients.

The psychology hit book “The Body Keeps the Score” tells us about how the trauma we’ve experienced in life shows up in the physical realm, almost directly so. Certain areas of pain denote a specific feeling or need.

While we are certainly not psychologists, nor do we make the claim that we can cure trauma, there is a building body of evidence showing that gaining ownership of our bodies is healing to our souls. Personal trainers and fitness coaches play a major part in giving everyday people that ownership. And it’s healing in more than just the physical realm. It gives us empowerment, confidence, the feeling of being in control and safe.
